Radio is not what it once was
10.16.07 (10:48 pm) [edit]
Radio has changed much over the years. I'm 54. Back in high school, FM underground emerged as an alternative to chaperoned top 40. We thought it wa improving with ideals in the forefront.
But more recently, Clear Channel and a few others have been buying up stations, and only playing the most popular tabulated tunes. It's so bad I couldn't request a novelty tune during "drive time", the commute rush hour. Bean counters are removing creativity from the deejay. You have to do what they say or you're out.
I was asked to start a blog about something. I hope I posted this in the right place.
Young people today may be deprived as we are by all this. Perhaps youthful alternative, be it grunge, rap, or whatever, have an online streaming radio that satisfies their specialty.
My favorite alternative is sponsored by small business and streams online. I may not be able to put links in this blog, but they can be googled. WRDV FM radio Delaware Valley plays different types of 50s music different nights (doowop, beebop, country, rockabilly, jazz) and 30s and 40s during the daytime. CHWO AM 740 in Toronto also covers some of this.
Perhaps others here feel as strongly as I do about the deadness of corporate facism killing radio.

Count me in! I RARELY listen to radio for music any more...just the talk shows. I listen to Ray Taliafaro late-night: a real progressive with his finger in the dike. That's KGO 8.10 on the AM dial. Also on KGO is their first gay host, "Karel". But why does he have to be such a stereotype, lisp and all? Whatever...he's really good, too, don't listen to him as much as I ought.
KALW (91.7 FM here in SF) has wonderful shows throughout the week, but I MOST enjoy their Sundays, what with Harry Shearer's "Le Show" for a whole delicious hour and than (at 1 o'clock) "This American Life".
On 9.10 AM is the hate-talk station KNEW. Always good to keep tabs on the enemy, especially Michael Savage. I mean, c'mon...don't you think MOST Jews in Germany listened to Hitler's radio speeches? For the same reason, I tune into Savage at least once per week. VERY homophobic, foments hatred and violence against us LGBT's.
Thank Goddess for the Internet! Right when Clear Channel is destroying the air waves, all this innovative diversity of creative talent is popping all over the 'net like cyber-mushrooms. Including not just music, but video, games, art and writing (MY forte).
Unfortunately, I STILL cannot afford high speed service, thus denying me access to MOST of these innovative creations. :(
